Schools

KCPS: One public education system with great school options for your child.

Neighborhood Schools
In Kansas City Public Schools (KCPS), our tuition-free Neighborhood Schools are open to any child who lives within their individual attendance boundaries. These are traditional and high-quality public schools that serve the families in their neighborhoods. Sometimes families ask to enroll their children in Neighborhood Schools outside of their attendance boundaries, and these requests are often granted by KCPS when space allows.

Signature Schools
Our tuition-free Signature Schools include nine campuses with unique academic themes and extracurricular opportunities for students from Pre-kindergarten to 12th grade. There are Signature Schools that focus on college preparation, foreign language immersion, dual-language education, African-centered studies, the Montessori method, and fine and performing arts.

Early Learning Community Schools
Early Learning Community Schools are tuition-free public schools that are part of the Kansas City Public School system and are open to any student who lives in the KCPS boundaries. Early Learning Community Schools are for 3- and 4-year-old’s and are offered on two campuses. Space is limited and families must meet Head Start guidelines to attend. Think of this as part of KCPS’s pre-K programming.

Alternative Schools
Alternative Schools are educational settings designed to accommodate educational, behavioral, and/or medical needs of children and adolescents that cannot be adequately addressed in a traditional school environment. KCPS has two alternative schools serving students in grades K-12.

Career & Technical School
KCPS offers a multitude of career and technical programs mainly based at Manual Career and Technical Center (MCTC). MCTC is a shared-time attendance center for KCPS high school students and charter school students. The students generally attend MCTC during their 11th or 12th-grade years. The Center offers 11 career and technical programs. This is the place for workforce development opportunities, internships, and hands-on skills.

KCPS Charter School Sponsorship
The KCPS Office of Education Collaboration sponsors one charter school, with two school buildings, educating students from kindergarten through high school. In July 2019, KCPS became the official sponsor of Allen Village.

KCPS Charter School
Allen Village School's mission is to create an academically rigorous, college-focused school that motivates the diverse needs of students and creates a love of learning where students can explore, create and develop knowledge and skills needed to succeed academically and personally.

Summer School
Students access courses scheduled during the summer months at KCPS sites. Courses are self-paced and blended to include independent online work, peer-to-peer group work, and teacher directed instruction. Courses are offered to include remedial and enrichment opportunities at the elementary level and credit recovery and attainment opportunities at the middle and high school level.
Virtual School
Students access KCPS approved K-12 school courses through vendor provided platforms with vendor provided instructors. Students work independently with the support of a vendor provided teacher.
