On Friday, Dec. 9, 2022, DECA students from Northeast High School and Lincoln College Preparatory Academy landed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, excited to participate in the Central Region Leadership Conference. They spent two days competing against and networking with more than 1,500 students from 13 states.
DECA is a career and technical student organization that focuses on business, marketing and entrepreneurship careers. Students compete in a variety of events including role plays where they are put in positions such as Marketing Managers, Human Resource Specialists and Advertising Consultants.
At the Central Region Leadership Conference, our students had the opportunity to listen to three incredible guest speakers: Dr. Layman Hicks, Kate Garnes and Brandon Lee White. These speakers engaged students with motivational messages throughout the conference. Students also attended a variety of workshops when they weren’t competing, including sessions on teamwork, networking, career planning and strategies to balance school and life.
“Work hard, play hard” is our DECA motto, and the students enjoyed some celebrations after long days of competition and workshops. There was a concert Friday night featuring Generation Z and Sam Guyton, and on Saturday night, students attended DECA Fest with a live DJ, games and local vendors serving Wisconsin treats. Northeast and Lincoln Prep students also got to explore the city. Our group had dinner in the Historic Third Ward at the Milwaukee Public Market, explored the Marquette University campus and strolled down the Milwaukee RiverWalk to see the holiday lights.
Our students were incredibly respectful and engaged throughout the trip. As their teachers, we are proud of how they represented Northeast, Lincoln Prep and KCPS. We look forward to growing our DECA program and establishing chapters at other KCPS schools. Thank you to everyone who worked hard to make this trip happen — our students will remember it forever.
